Increase your influence by developing key relationships at work

Do you have to make recommendations and move projects forward? Due to the number of inter-departmental projects and limited resources, your organisation becomes a chessboard where influence and diplomacy – in addition to skill – are use in order to reach your objectives.

This training session answers the following questions: How to develop your credibility and influence? How to map an influence network? Which strategy is most appropriate according to the players, their power, and their goals? How to play the diplomacy game in a healthy way without manipulating or being manipulated? How to create healthy and productive alliances?

OBJECTIVES

  5. Expand your repertoire of strategies to better influence and persuade

  6. Adapt your communication style according to your audience

CONTENT

1. BASICS

  • Concepts of influence and persuasion

  • The process of effective communication

  • Development of a personal action plan targeting communication and influence objectives

2. BECOME AN INFLUENCER

  • Psychometric questionnaires to determine personality, skills, and influence

  • Identify your preferred communication style

  • Evaluate your type and level of influence

  • Recognise your natural influence techniques and pitfalls

  • Concentrate on strengths

3. FORM STRATEGIES ACCORDING TO PERSONALITY

  • Exercise: As a team, find the needs associated with different personalities

  • Mediation (alliances, negociation, influence)

  • Reflexion (facts, arguments, assembling a business case, benefits)

  • Tradition (hierarchy, rigor, loyalty, change management)

  • Innovation (vision, idea creation, long-term vision, innovation)

  • Action (timing, influence the boss, take the lead, perseverence)

4. CHARACTERISTICS OF INFLUENCERS

  • Communicate without attacking or submitting

  • Credibility

  • Develop trust, collaboration and respect from colleagues

  • Rules of the game

  • Play to win

  • Play ethically

  • Defuse emotional reactions to get for more collaboration

5. STRATEGIES ACCORDING TO CONTEXT

  • Analyse the environment

  • Use tools to increase influence

  • Map a network of influence

  • Strategy according to analysis (anticipate barriers and possible solutions)

  • Mange resistance and change

  • Tools needed for various strategies

6. COMMUNICATION WITH IMPACT

  • Prepare a strategic meeting

  • Present your ideas

  • Develop an argument

  • Present effectively

  • Apply useful communication tools in specific situations

  • Avoid messages that block communication

  • Encourage constructive communication

  • Exercise: board game to assimilate concepts

  • Project presentation workshop: presentation with colleague feedback
