Animals in the office

May 4, 2023

What would you do if your office allowed pets? While still relatively uncommon, some employers are making it a reality, much to everyone's delight.

A New Trend

In recent years, some workplaces have been innovating regarding the presence of animals. It's increasingly common to see companies encouraging the presence of furry or feathered companions in the office. Whether through special "bring your dog to work" days or general tolerance in management offices, it's now common to see animals in certain professional settings. In Canada, companies like Mondou and Mars even allow dogs or cats for some management positions.

The Benefits

While this new trend may seem unusual, it offers several advantages. First, the presence of animals can reduce anxiety at work. Their presence lessens the stress of being separated from their pets for a day at the office. Furthermore, the act of petting is known to alleviate anxiety. Furthermore, their presence increases employee happiness at work, thus fostering team loyalty and improving productivity. Our four-legged companions are therefore true assets to a management team.

Facilitating their integration

It is clear that the presence of animals is not suitable for all jobs. It is therefore important to assess the feasibility of allowing them in the office. When it is realistic to consider their presence, it is essential to adapt the workspace to ensure their safe integration.

Whether they are cats, dogs, or reptiles, it is important to draw up a set of rules to govern their arrival. Consult your team to develop rules adapted to your environment. Consider access to food and water, designated areas for animal needs, and define a clear perimeter. It is also important to identify areas where the presence of animals is prohibited. In addition, it can be a good idea to provide supplies, such as toys, food, or a litter box.

If pets aren't possible in your workplace, you can always organize events that allow them, such as a dog-friendly summer barbecue. In short, this new idea brings a breath of fresh air to some jobs, but it's not suitable for everyone. Would you consider allowing pets in your office?
