Our client, located on the south shore of Montreal, is looking for an OIQ Member Design Engineer to ensure compliance with the organizational standards established for the racking inspection, training and engineering program of our client's engineering division. This is a dual role, with responsibilities split equally between design and inspection engineering.
Here is a description of your main responsibilities:
Job Requirements (Design Engineer)
- Design - Interpret customer sales requests to propose steel storage system designs that creatively optimize the use of warehouse space, and assess the load capacity and stability of racking/shelving structures. This requires highly developed analytical skills, including the ability to take into account second-order effects and seismic loads, for the design of high-value engineered systems. Good experience with AutoCAD, various modeling software (RISA 3D), and finite element analysis (FEA) software is required.
- Technical Review and Certification - Prepare and review technical drawings and specifications for shelving, racking and industrial multi-level storage systems to ensure completeness, accuracy and compliance with applicable codes (NBC, IBC) and standards (CSA S136, CSA S16, CSA W59, ASCE 7); Prepare and affix your professional engineer's seal to technical documents, including installation documents, associated capability reports and permits, and manufacturing CAD drawings, for technical approval. Conduct field inspections for quality assurance and general compliance.
- Special R&D Projects - Assist with special projects that enhance our client's engineering capabilities and initiatives (e.g., maintaining accurate engineering analysis worksheets for company-wide use, actively participating in the development and evaluation of new product designs, product testing, etc.).
Job Requirements (Inspection Engineer)
- On-site Inspections - Oversee and perform, as required, on-site inspections of racking in industrial warehouses and distribution centers to determine and evaluate their physical condition and load capacity; advice on corrective action required to ensure compliance with applicable standards and best practices for steel storage systems; competently use various inspection software applications and produce timely, professionally sealed reports based on inspection findings.
- CAD Drawing Preparation - Competently use AutoCAD software to prepare 2D drawings showing the configuration, elevation and detail of steel shelving, racking and multi-level storage systems; strictly adhere to established drawing standards and techniques; and demonstrate attention to detail to ensure drawings are accurate and complete for engineering certification purposes.
- Technical Evaluation - Review engineering drawings and specifications for steel racking components and fittings; conduct preliminary structural analyses, including seismic reviews, of industrial cold-rolled and hot-rolled steel storage systems; calculate allowable load capacities of existing racking in accordance with applicable building codes and standards.
- Repair Specification - Inspect, evaluate, and provide specification options for the repair of damaged racking components and systems in accordance with industry standards to maintain equivalent levels of structural strength and stability.
- Technical Support - Provide in-depth technical support on racking safety, usage and maintenance issues to internal sales teams, product managers, customers, consultants and other sub-contractors, all in consultation with your engineering colleagues.
