Mentoring

Mentoring is the provision of free, voluntary, personal and confidential assistance over an extended period of time to meet the specific needs of a mentee. This assistance is related to the mentee's personal and professional development and to the development of his/her skills.

Objectives

  • This can be done on a just-in-time basis, when the need arises. For example, a mentee who is struggling with a situation where a colleague has been repeatedly disrespectful to him or her could discuss this with the mentor.
  • The framework is not as structured as other learning methods; this mechanism can allow for less specific topics than other methods.
  • The development of a trusting and bonding relationship that is established through the continuity of the connection will allow the mentor to enter more sensitive areas than traditional training.
