Step One: Assess the Team

Prior to the meeting, team members individually complete a detailed and validated questionnaire about how their team is functioning. Compiling the results gives an accurate perception of what is working and what is not. At the meeting, the team and facilitator work together to:

1. Identify the team's strengths and weaknesses

  • Explore the team's strengths
  • Identify blockages to high effectiveness
  • Measure the team's effectiveness in overcoming barriers to effectiveness
  • Determine factors to develop to increase team performance

2. Establish a concrete action plan to be implemented by the team leader, the team as a whole and individual team members

  • The facilitator explains and interprets these results, validates them with the team members and establishes an action plan with them.
  • The diagnostic instrument used is the Team Assessment Questionnaire, by Francis and Young, world-renowned experts in team development.
