Professional transgender identity

March 16, 2023

In March, several days highlight the struggles for the rights of marginalized communities. March 31st is Transgender Day of Visibility: a day that celebrates transgender people and members of the gender pluralism community. This day also raises awareness about the discrimination these individuals face in their daily lives. In this article, we will explore some of the challenges transgender people may encounter in their workplaces and how employers can help create a safe and inclusive environment.

More Challenges

One of the biggest challenges transgender people face is discrimination. It is difficult to find an environment free from microaggressions. These can take many forms, such as micromanagement, verbal invalidation, unfair dismissal, or being denied a promotion.

For a transgender person, it can be anxiety-inducing to be surrounded by people who don't understand their reality. When starting a new job, navigating issues of gender identity can be challenging. Should I disclose my transgender identity right away? What if my employer changes their behavior after I come out? How will my colleagues react? All these questions can discourage a transgender person from joining a corporate environment.

Employer Responsibilities

When there are clear anti-discrimination policies in place regarding harassment or discrimination based on gender identity, employers can ensure that all employees are protected and treated equally. These policies must be communicated to all employees so they can be trained on issues of diversity, inclusion, and gender identity.

Furthermore, managers must work closely with transgender employees to address their specific needs. This may include gender-neutral work environments, the use of specific pronouns, or modifications to work routines. An employer can also provide group insurance that covers healthcare for transgender individuals, such as hormone therapy or voice therapy sessions.

Reflection

This March, it's important to engage in the necessary introspection to recognize your preconceived notions and promote openness in your workplace. When you recognize transphobic behavior in your circle, you must hold those close to you accountable for the impact of their actions and words. March is a month to celebrate differences and acknowledge the social issues that can permeate the professional world.

In conclusion, civility and openness are assets in your workplace. A happy team always delivers better results.
