The labor shortage

February 2, 2023

Currently in Quebec, many workplaces are making significant efforts to recruit reliable and competent employees. However, the current context seems to complicate this task.
In fact, recruiting and retaining existing staff are among the most important challenges that Quebec managers will still face in 2023.

The Staff Shortage

It's no secret that the job market is overflowing with job postings and creative, innovative advertisements to meet the immense needs of work teams. Companies that can offer good salaries and working conditions are very often the ones that stand out and succeed in the professional world. With an aging population, another challenge is added to those already existing: there are fewer and fewer young professionals to fill available positions. The next generation of professionals is thus faced with a wide range of choices, while employers, for their part, must hurry to present an equally competitive offer.
With a vacancy rate of 5.6% in Quebec, it's clear that the labor shortage is being felt in the workplace. While working conditions and salary are obviously important factors when choosing a new job, these elements are often no longer enough to retain employees. Companies, large or small, must provide workers with a stimulating and engaging work environment.

Engagement

As a manager, simply coaching and providing daily support to your team is no longer sufficient. A leader must motivate their team and be a positive influence; they must be a guiding light for their colleagues. Their role is to show them the way and guide them so that each person becomes the best version of themselves. For example, when a leader presents an individual or team objective, they ensure that it meets the criteria of a SMART objective (Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, Time-bound), and even a more robust SMARTER objective (ER for Evaluable and Relevant). A team is far more productive and engaged when it works alongside a committed and empathetic manager rather than a superior focused solely on performance. Statistically, employees with good working conditions and stimulating jobs are happier.
A happy and engaged employee is loyal to their organization and has a higher level of motivation. Being a mobilizing leader is therefore essential in today's professional environment.
